INFORMATION LITERACY RESOURCES -
  • Web Literacy - website validation strategy
    • R - Read the URL (Domain name, extension, personal page?)
    • E - Examine the Content (Useful info, resources/links, last update, accuracy, contradictions, history?)
    • A - Ask about the Author or Website Owner (site ownership or publisher?)
    • L - Look at the Links (URLs of forward links, change in domain names, biased information, external links?)

Below are a set of websites that can be used with students of varied ages. Use the REAL strategy to learn more about them.
1. All About Explorers:http://www.allaboutexplorers.com
If you teach anything about exploration, this site is a must. It’s smart, slick and cleverly done, plus has a host of great activities.

2. California’s Velcro Crop Under Challenge:http://home.inreach.com/kumbach/velcro.html
Did you know about the Velcro shortage in California? Use this fun site to help students separate fact from fiction on the web.

3. Dihydrogen Monoxide:http://www.dhmo.org
Who knew water could be so hazardous. A good site to use with middle school students. Have them click through the forward links on the site. Does the web site reference any other authors?

4. Dog Island Free Forever:http://www.thedogisland.com
A puppy dog paradise. Great site for all ages.

5. Feline Reactions to Bearded Men:http://improbable.com/airchives/classical/cat/cat.html
A fun site to use when teaching kids how to validate web resources. Science teachers take note! This site pokes fun at the scientific method.

6. Martin Luther King:http://www.martinlutherking.org
This seemingly innocent web site address calls for the abolition of Martin Luther King Day and promotes White Pride. Content is inappropriate for all ages.
7. The Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus:http://zapatopi.net/treeoctopus.html
Does the Octopus really exist? A great site to use with all ages. Have students click through the links and read web addresses carefully.

8. Victorian Robots: http://www.bigredhair.com/robots/index.html
A great site for all ages. It has even stumped historians. Have students truncate the web address down to http://www.bigredhair.com. This will give them some insight into the validity of this site.

  • http://www.easywhois.com - easyWhois tells you the dates the site was created, specific contact names and addresses at which the organization is based. A helpful tool to research website owner information and to assist with determining the quality of information on the website.

You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends

The program helps to quickly identify important words that appear in the text. This function is widely available in various Tag Cloud programs on the web, but we have added the ability to mark and sort different lists of words important to educators. We have also integrated it with a few other functions, such as visualization of word thesaurus relationships (incorporating the amazing Visual Thesaurus® that we highly recommend in its own right) and Google® searches of images and videos. With just a click on any word in the Tag Cloud, the program displays instances of sentences in which that word is used in the text.
  • VoiceThread- http://voicethread.com/ - A VoiceThread is a collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos and allows people to navigate slides and leave comments in 5 ways - using voice (with a mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video (via a webcam).
